Important Announcement - Short Course

Summary of significant changes to the racing rules for Short Track – effective 2010-2011 season.

1) The word “penalty” replaces the term “disqualification” or DQ.

Therefore a skater who has made an infringement will be given a “Penalty” and will be disqualified from the relevant race and excluded from participation in the next round. Points for that race only will be forfeited, points gained prior will not be affected.

If the infringement is more serious, for example very unsafe, harmful or hazardous, a yellow card will be given.

The penalty will be as above but will carry a further sanction of loss of all points accrued in the distance concerned.

Two yellow cards in the same competition will equal a red card. This will require the skater to be excluded from the competition immediately and not ranked in the final classification.

A red card is reserved for intentionally dangerous or grossly negligent behaviour and means exclusion immediately from the competition. Two red cards in the space on 12 months will result in suspension to ISU events etc....

2) Starting – the only significant change is the location of the skaters.

For example, if there was a non start from a skater in lane two, the skaters on the outside would move left to fill the gap. This also applies if a skater has two false starts, the gap is filled.

If there are five starters, the starting dot positions will not be used. If there are more than five , a second row will be used and the skaters will be positioned as far as possible towards the outside of the track.

For example, 8 starters, lane 8 will be behind 5, 7 behind 4, 6 behind 3. With s starters they would be positioned behind lane 5.

3) Infringements – basically there are now only four possible breaches when racing.

“Off-track”, basically the same, skating inside the markers or going inside the finish line when finishing.

“Impeding”, blocking, charging or pushing another skater with any part of the body. Interfering with another skater by crossing their path thereby causing contact that is deliberate.

Basically the referees have agreed that if the passage is safe and clean then it is OK. This then gives the skater the right to “protect their patch”. The onus is still on the overtaking skater until they are level. If the skater being overtaken acts improperly i.e. swinging an arm across to clock, that skater will receive a penalty.

NEW ZEALAND WINTER GAMES 2011

In just three months time the NZWG will be held in the Otago region, with the snow
sports being held around Queenstown and Wanaka and the ice sports in Naseby and
Dunedin.

It is very exciting for our sport to be included, as we missed the opportunity when the
games were held last, in 2009.

Planning for the games is well underway and I have been involved in a number of
meetings making sure our sport is well catered for. With the preliminary entries closing
early in June we have had an early indication that at least four countries will be sending
teams and some officials from overseas have accepted invitations to participate.
In an effort to ensure that we could guarantee overseas participation, we structured the
events to cover not only senior men and ladies but also ISU Age Groups A, B and C
(skaters in age groups 17-19yrs, 15-16yrs, 13-14yrs). The New Zealand Selectors will
this week, issue a list of NZ skaters who are eligible to compete and from which the
selection will be made. They will also send out the criteria to be used.

The selection of the New Zealand Team will be made following the Canterbury
Championships on 28th May and the announcement will follow upon ratification by the
Board of ISSNZ.

A number of local officials have indicated that they are available to assist at the NZWG,
as well as the National Championships and we are grateful for their cooperation.
Accommodation for key officials will be available through the Winter Games
organisers at two hotels which are sponsoring the event and Air New Zealand, also a
sponsor, is subsidizing some of the air travel.

The NZWG organisers will liaise with the team through the NZ Team Manager (yet to be
appointed) concerning any details regarding the NZ Team. I will personally keep in
contact with the appointed officials.

We are looking forward to displaying to the New Zealand public and to visitors and
overseas viewers, a quality competition including the best of New Zealand Short Track
racing.

Skater finishes 9th overall at World Allround Championships

Shane Dobbin has finished a creditable 9^th place at the World Allround Long Track Ice Speed Skating Championships over the weekend. The former world inline roller marathon champion and Winter Olympian who switched to ice 2 seasons ago broke 3 NZ records. Dobbin broke his own national record in the 5000m to finish 5^th in a time of 6:15:69. He then went one better to finish 4^th in the 10000m with a time of 13:06:17 which smashed 10 seconds off his previous personal best. Dobbin also took over a second off his 1500m to record a time of 1:46:61. His combined times which also included a 500m gave him a points total of 150.003, yet another national record.

Dobbin now heads to Salt Lake City to compete in a World Cup 10000m next weekend. Dobbin finished 4^th in the 10000m at his last World Cup in Hamar Norway.
